I'm now cleared to do stuff outside the house. To unofficially celebrate this, I got some Red Sox tickets for tonight's game.
We (my dad, myself, and two little cousins) got there around six, and I went over by the Sox bullpen to watch the team warm up. Some other Sox fan asked about me not having any teeth so I explained the whole story, including how I was having facial surgery and by cheering a Jason Varitek home run, I got shot up with anesthetic in the face.
At this point, the great times began. Varitek overheard my story somehow, and when he finished warming up, came over. He signed my usual Red Sox hat, (the one I've always worn), and another Sox guy brought up that Seinfeld episode where Kramer promises two home runs for a injured kid. He added, "So Jason, you gonna hit two out for this guy tonight?" Tek joked "Yeah, and Papi'll hit two more out as well." Unofficially, the gauntlet was thrown.
In the second inning, Varitek come up to bat. I lean over to my cousins and say "Here's the guy who signed my hat. He's gonna hit one out." Next pitch...home run. I just sit there in awe as my dad and cousins were stunned by what happened.
Going into the ninth, the Tigers were up 3-2. With Ortiz coming to bat, I think "With one here...that'd be two." Two pitches later...home run to right. At this point, I'm just about insane. With no more scoring in the inning, the Sox come up again in the tenth. Already 5-3 Boston, Ortiz comes up...and hits another home run. No words can describe what I'm thinking at this point. Roughly...Ortiz has two. Two outs, and if Manny gets a hit, up comes Varitek. Naturally, Manny doubles down the line...and Varitek homers.
It's improbable, unlikely and probably impossible...but my Red Sox always come through for me. Always.
Varitek said to me that he and Ortiz will hit two home runs for me, no matter how jokingly it might've been...they both did it. Wow.
